January 1st – Unox Nieuwjaarsduik
Scheveningen Beach, the Netherlands
Every January 1st the Dutch host the largest single polar bear plunge in the world. Around 10.000 (!) people take a dip in the frigid North Sea together, to celebrate the new year. With temperatures of water and air rarely above 5° Celsius (41 Fahrenheit) it’s a wonder so many people show up and it’s always so much fun to shoot this event using my underwater camera equipment. Nothing beats waking up at noon with 10.000 people running towards you! © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

February 4th – Hard Bass
Gelredome, the Netherlands
Hard Bass is a massive gathering of Hardcore (house) lovers and the show heavily focusus on lights and lasers. It was a hard choice but lights prevailed this time. Stay tuned for next year, I’ll get some lasers again! © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

February 4th – Hard Bass
Gelredome, the Netherlands
A very well dressed partygoer! Saw this guy hanging around the barrier (the divider near the stage) and just had to grab a few pics. Loved how it came out, looks pretty surreal to me. #vapelife © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

March 4th – Don’t Let Daddy Know
Ziggo Dome Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Although they have been around for a bunch of years now, 2017 was my first time shooting for DLDK. With a younger crowd than average in Holland the atmosphere is different from most other big events. Needless to say things went wild, very wild and I got a photo to prove it. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

March 24th – Ultra Music Festival
Downtown Miami, USA
Miami is Ultra month and every year I scout the Friday afternoon opening queues for a good shot, one that tells the whole story. This year I think I found the perfect one. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

March 24th – Armin @ Ultra Music Festival
Downtown Miami, USA
Yes, even Miami can have bad weather – I usually don’t mind because it often does something really cool to the crowds: people seem to care less and party harder. It’s a nightmare for your equipment though so I took a break on the mainstage. While trying to dry my camera I noticed the clouds in front of Armin being wild. It was just a matter of waiting for his famous pose and press my shutter button. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

March 24th – Major Lazer @ Ultra Music Festival
Downtown Miami, USA
Ultra also means trying to find good angles up in the air around the venue. Not always easy, but I often have a few people helping me out and inviting me into their homes. Alfredo & María (now plus Veronica, congrats) have been super kind the past few years and let me exploit one of the best angles around the festival. Thank you so much for helping me get this amazing Major Lazer photo. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

March 25th – Tiësto @ Ultra Music Festival
Downtown Miami, USA
Trying to show how big a stage can be isn’t always easy, small people and big productions are not always a good mix. I was scouting for a long time before I finally found the right spot, just needed a Tiësto and a bit of pyro to finish it off. Now you know: Ultra mainstage is huge! © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

March 26th – Ultra Music Festival
Downtown Miami, USA
Sometimes things are too good to be true, sometimes they’re just outright crazy. One of the Ultra people was talking about llamas and I overheard him, not sure why or what was going on I left it at that. Later that night I was trying out a new angle when I suddenly saw something fly by in my image. I automatically shot some photos and found out it was a llama flying by. Not just any llama: “Panchita La Llama Raver” has almost 60k followers on Facebook and is a celebrity in South America! I sent my Ultra buddy the photo over the phone and needless to say, craziness ensured! This is now one of my all-time favorite photos, there’s simply no planning this. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

May 3rd – Caribbean Reef Sharks
Bimini, Bahamas
I’ve always been a huge fan of sharks and been lucky enough to do quite a few dives with these magnificent creatures. So when my friend Peter invited me and my family over to his place on the island for relaxing, fishing and diving we needed no time to decide. It’s hard to explain the feeling when you are sharing the ocean with these 3 meter long predators but “in awe” seems to be in the right direction. Proud that even my kids dipped in for a couple of minutes. They are never too young to learn about conservation and respect for animals. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

May 14th – The Best of Armin Only
Amsterdam ArenA, the Netherlands
I’ve been lucky enough to have photographed many Armin Only shows the past few years. So when the huge two final shows in the ArenA came up I was, again, honored to be part of the team. It’s easily the best DJ-only show that I have every experienced so make sure to watch the recap on Youtube if you don’t know what I’m talking about. I had been instructed to make sure not to miss the one-time-shot with the balloons at the end of the show. So when I was in position, balls flying and Armin turned around for a second I managed to grab the shot that I needed. I love a bit of pressure. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

May 20th – Granada ballooning
Granada, Spain
I come from a travel-photography & writing background and have done many reports from the most beautiful places on earth. So when Spain Tourism called for some adventures in the south of Spain I did not hesitate to join the trip. The absolute highlight (..) was a hot air balloon trip in the early morning. Now usually I go to bed at 4am, so getting up at this time was a nice change for me, but so worth it. The quietness of a balloon ride can only be experienced in real life so make sure to do this at least once in your lifetime! © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

May 27th – WiSH Outdoor Mexico
Monterrey, Mexico
I love going to Mexico, some of the best crowds in the world can be found there but the practice of catapulting each other in the air is my favorite thing to capture. You need a little patience but walking away with pictures like these is priceless! © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

June 3rd – SS Rotterdam
Rotterdam, the Netherlands
The large ship in this photo is the ship that brought my parents together, my mother was head-nurse on this ship sailing worldwide and my father was a legal for the company that had to deal with “ambulance-chasing” lawyers from the USA and had to consult with the nurse for his reports. The “consulting” started to happening very frequently and eventually my brother and I resulted from their marriage that lasted till their deaths of age. Amazingly just few weeks before taking this shot, while on assignment for a large festival in my hometown, we had spread their ashes together in front of the bow - reuniting them for eternity. Needless to say this photo hangs in both mine and my brother’s house. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

June 9th – View over Singapore
Singapore, Singapore
The swimming pool of the Marina Bay Sands is probably the most famous pool in the world and to the side there’s this balcony that is perfect for getting great night shots of this incredible city. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

June 11th – Steve Angello @ Ultra Singapore
Singapore, Singapore
The best new set this year was definitely Steve Angello’s - with his dramatic “Rejoice” song that blew everyone away. Adding lots of smoke and light effects it was a dream to photograph. But from all pictures that I took, this intimate detail was still my favorite. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

June 17th – Denial Island at EDC Vegas
Las Vegas, USA
What is there to say? How many times do you get to share a helicopter with Paris Hilton? I’ve always been a fan of her antics and she did not disappoint at all: an in-control power woman with a great selfie phone! © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

July 8th – Sensation The Final
Amsterdam ArenA, the Netherlands
I’ve photographed almost every edition of the famous Sensation White shows since the beginning. So when I was asked to join the very final one in Amsterdam I was absolutely thrilled. Contrary to what people think this is a very hard show to photograph: stage access is limited, the show is usually very dark and it can get really crowded. From all photos I took that night this is by far my favorite: I always love shooting dancers and when they’re dangling from the ceiling it only gets more fun! © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

July 13th – Krka National Park
Krka, Croatia
Every year I get to return to my favorite European country Croatia for Ultra Europe. With an extra day this year due to flight schedules I headed out with my colleagues Alex and Pearcey for some shooting at a nearby park, famous for its waterfalls. It was my first time experimenting with (ND) filters that allow you to use very long exposures during daytime. I’m since hooked and bought my first set, good ones are crazy expensive but it is fun to fool around with this kind of thing. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

July 17th – Hardwell @ Ultra Europe
Split, Croatia
I’d been eyeing the stage and LED panel setup all weekend but never got a perfect shot, it was just a matter of waiting for the visuals and DJ to align perfectly. It took a long time as Hardwell was the closing act of the whole festival. But, got it! © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

July 22nd – Tomorrowland
Boom, Belgium
There can be no best-of without at least one helicopter photo over Tomorrowland. The place is incredible to be watched from the air in an open-door helicopter. Goosebumps, every time. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

July 27th – Dreamville @ Tomorrowland

July 30th – Tomorrowland
Boom, Belgium
It is not always easy to show the size of the place and the way it feels and looks. Nothing beats reality and I guess that’s why tickets are hard to come by. I tried really hard just around sunset, think this came out pretty nice. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

August, 18th – Isaac @ Decibel Outdoor
Hilvarenbeek, the Netherlands
Decibel Outdoor is my favorite Hardcore/Hardstyle event of the year. The venue has such a variety of trees, water and open fields that it’s hard not to take fun photos. Also, the stages are wild and huge which gives it a nice contrast with the green surroundings. Although the weather wasn’t great most of the day, it finally cleared up for a moment and luckily I was just at the right place to bring out the colors. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

July 26th – Mysteryland
Floriade, the Netherlands
Another favorite festival with an unbeatable venue is Mysteryland, the Tomorrowland predecessor. The landscape is funny with many hidden spots and places plus the festival has a very strong emphasis on arts and creative add-ons. I always have a ton of fun of shooting this place but its killing for your feet since the place is huge. This years’ stage was gorgeous, especially in the evening. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

July 31st – The Ark
Meditteranean Sea
My first ever cruise and a dance cruise at that. Three words: it was crazy! Very, very wild and one of the highlights of the year for me. Can’t wait for this years’ edition! © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

September 7th – Chainsmokers @ Road to Ultra India
Mumbai, India
Another first, shooting the Chainsmokers. It’s fun, it’s fast and hard not to walk away with good shots at any given gig. Sometimes closer is better than wide... © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

September 12 – Taipei 101
Taipei, Taiwan
During my two week Ultra Asia tour I had a four-day stop in Taipei and got super lucky with an incoming typhoon. The night before a typhoon happen to have the best sunsets one can imagine so here I was with my local buddy Lorenzo who showed me around everywhere like this prime lookout over the city. It looks so tranquil on the photo but I’m actually halfway up a tree and in the company of at least 100 other photos. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

September 16th – Rezz @ Road to Ultra Hong Kong
Hong Kong
One of the rising stars of the dance industry has got to be Rezz, check out her awesome music. She’s a lot of fun to photograph, even in the rare case she’s not wearing her awesome LED-glasses. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

October 13th – Ultra Angels @ Ultra Brasil
Rio, Brasil
From the first moment of starting to work for Ultra – 6 years ago almost – I’ve always enjoyed taking many photos of the Ultra Angels. It’s amazing to see how they’ve professionalized over the years and how my photos of them got better and better as well. I knew fire and confetti were coming up and decided to leave the DJ alone for a change and get the best Angel photo ever. This is easily my favorite photo of them. It never scored high on socials but who cares… this one would have certainly made my book! © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

October 21st – Amsterdam Music Festival
Amsterdam ArenA, the Netherlands
Just a photo with a ton of confetti – it was cool to capture it like this. I was totally in the wrong spot – or so I thought. But the weird angle worked quite well and this photo went wild on my Instagram. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

October 22nd – Amsterdam Music Festival

Hard to see, but this is actually Hardwell & Armin doing a back to back. This is one of my favorite angles for this festival because the stage design is so see-through. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

October 28th – Thunderdome
Gelredome, the Netherlands
My early dance photography life was partially geared around the most popular hardcore house parties that the Netherlands had in those days: Thunderdome. Because of the rise of my EDM photography I didn’t shoot this event for quite a few years until they announced the 20 year anniversary. It sold out in no-time and for me it was a huge honor and pleasure to be part of the team. It felt like a total step back in time, only the crowd had aged a decade but was just as good as it was back in the days. Damn, I’m getting old. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

December 2nd – Hardwell
Mumbai, India
Two years ago Hardwell started his own charity after seeing extremely poor kids sleeping under a billboard depicting him as a headliner for a party in Mumbai. With the World’s Biggest Guestlist event he’s been trying to raise enough funds to send as many underprivelidged children to school. That party, two years ago, was one of the wildest things I’ve ever witnessed in the dance scene so when the follow up came this year I offered my services for free again without a thought. A weekend in Mumbai is a crazy thing, everything happens in a blur but I just simply needed one moment that showed the other side – a moment of thought, of contemplation. I eventually found it on the roof of our hotel. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

December 17th – Nucleya @ Enchanted Valley Carnival
Mumbai, India
My second India trip in November was for EVC, the first time at a new (airconditioned) venue in the middle of the city. Like Rezz, Nucleya was high on my wishlist for this year with his insane beats and Bollywood crossovers. He did not disappoint at all, the guy is a piece of ADHD on steroids which makes it so much fun to capture a perfect moment like this. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

December 22nd – Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike Bringing the Madness
Antwerp, Belgium
Just before Christmas DV&LM; host their own party in their home country. Organized by the people behind Tomorrowland, so needless to say the production is heavily over the top with DJ booths on cranes or wires and a rooftop loaded with lights. I really like this weird shot because it wasn’t easy to take. Being in a very full and packed crowd for 20 minutes two beers hit me in the first three minutes alone is not the best fun in the world. But how this shots makes the stage looks like it has hair is just priceless. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling

December 28th – TimeOut72 Festival
Goa, India
They say three times is the charm, so the final photo is from my third December India visit. TimeOut72 is a new festival that has moved into the venue that used to host Sunburn (now in Pune). It always has been one of my favorite sites in the world, for one part because of the amazing sunsets. The other because of having the craziest crowd in the world. With the stage in a different position this time plus a walkway added I just needed to bide my time for a shot like this. It’s taking these sort of photos at these sort of places that make me so love my job. Hopefully I’ll be able to do so for many more years and I hope you’ve enjoyed this little view into my life as a photographer. Peace. © Rudgr/Rutger Geerling
