The second game in Group A was between unfancied Greece and much fancied Russia. Russia played really well in their opening game and a little less well in their second game, but they still only needed a point to progress to the quarter finals. Greece hasn’t made anyone’s (apart from the Greek fans obviously) heart tick over faster with their playing style this tournament, but a win against the stronger Russian side would see them go into the quarter finals. Russia tried and tried and tried, but they kept walking into a defensive wall of Greeks. And then Greece’s captain, Karagounis, scored the goal they needed. The defensive lines were set up again and the Russian threw all they had at it, but to no avail. The Greeks go through in what must be the upset of the tournament so far. Let’s hope it brings a little joy to the Greek population, because as of tomorrow it is back to paying off debts.
