Warriors of the Sea
This is an essay I’ve been working on between my jobs. It’s a very long term project I’ve been doing since 2007, when I talked with some fishermen in a beach. Always I’m travelling somewhere with beaches I try to get into contact with the local fishermen, to know a little bit more of their job and life. Since 2007 I’ve been shooting fishermen working on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, because their life always crossed my way, someway. I usually say if I was not a photojournalist, I would certainly become fisherman.
Thanks Gio for sending us your photos. Please visit Giordanno Bruno’s Flickr site for more of his work.
Fishermen wake up before the sun goes up in the beaches of Costa do Sol (Sun’s Coast) at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and go home just when the sun is going down on the horizon. In the cities surrounded by great beaches like Saquarema, Búzios, Arraial do Cabo and Itaipuaçu, the fishermen make their living with the living creatures they hunt in 14 hours work at the sea.
Usually they come home with something to sell and get money for it. But there are times they have nothing, and it get’s difficult do pay the bills.
